Oedipus

This 1864 version Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' Oedipus and the Sphinx hangs in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland.
"The Sphinx, a mythical creature-part-lion, part woman - reacts in horror as Oedipus solves her riddle, breaking her spell and condemning her to death. Henry Walters, founder of the Walters Art Museum, purchased three oils by Ingres, a French Neoclassical painter, in the first quarter of the 20th century. This extended the scope of his father's already significant holdings of French art into new territory." -- The Walters Art Gallery
