Abraham Lincoln

This 1920 statue of Abraham Lincoln by Daniel Chester French sits in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.

This statue appears on the 1959 4 ¢ stamp.

The statue was constructed from 28 blocks of Georgia marble. This picture of a headless Lincoln appeared in The Lincoln Memorial, Washington, by Concklin and Nicolay, 1927.

Lincoln's hands have their own folklore. The NPS denies the claim that Lincoln's left hand is signing A in ASL and his right is signing L, thus spelling out his initials. Others say that his closed left hand represents the determination that carried him through the Civil War and the open right hand represents his openness toward the defeated confederates.
