Francis Hopkinson





This 1834 portrait of Francis Hopkinson (1796-1870) by Thomas Sully hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. According to Biddle and Fielding, Sully's 16" X 21" Portrait was begun May 19th, 1834, finished June 9th, 1834

This Francis Hopkinson is the grandson of Francis Hopkinson (1737 – 1791) the signer of the Declaration of Independence and designer of the American Flag. He is the son of Joseph Hopkinson (1770 – 1842) U.S. Congressman and District Judge who wrote the lyrics to Hail, Columbia.
