Sir John Dill

This equestrian statue by Herbert Haseltine stands over  the grave of Sir John Dill in Section 32 of Arlington Cemetery at the intersection of Roosevelt and Grant Drives.

Arlington Cemetery describes the statue:

Designed by internationally acclaimed equestrian sculptor Herbert Haseltine and cast in Belgium, the bronze statue depicts Sir Dill in a British World War II-era military uniform, astride his horse. (It is one of two equestrian statues in the cemetery; the other honors Maj. Gen. Philip Kearny.)  -- ANC

Haseltine was a specialist animal sculptor, especially horses. His most famous work may be the statue on the grave of race-horse Man o' War at Man O’ War Farm in Lexington Kentucky.   Man O' War was originally buried at Faraway Farm, in Lexington. Here's Captain Herbert Haseltine as drawn by Lucien Jonas, from L’Armee Americaine by Dobon-Aine, 1918. (See Clare O'Brien, Sept. 27, 2023, The Marshall Foundation.)

“Herbert Haseltine (sculpteur) cap. Engineer. USA.”

When Field Marshall Dill died on the 4th of November, 1944, he was Senior British Representative on the Combined Chiefs of Staff an organization that provided unified command for British and American Troops in WWII. He had expressed a wish to be buried in Arlington.  Six years later on November 1st 1950, this monument was dedicated.
