Lincoln is  shown walking forward, wearing his tall hat, holding out a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation.

 

It is actually, a version of the of the Proclamation edited for readability.

    A Proclamation.

        …all persons held as slaves…

        Shall be then,

        Thenceforward, and forever free.

        Done at the city of Washington,

       this first day of January,

        in the year of our lord, one thousand

        eight hundred and sixty three.

Lincoln once said that “Brady and the Cooper Union speech made me President.” Brady's photo of a beardless Lincoln taken just before the famous speech at the Cooper Union did much to publicize the  candidacy of Abraham Lincoln.
