Horatio Gates

This c. 1800 portrait of Horatio Gates at Saratoga by James Peale hangs in the Maryland Historical Society Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
"James Peale painted one of the most significant battles of the Revolution. American Maj. Gen. Horatio Gates's victory seen here at Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1777 initiated the momentum that ultimately resulted in winning the war at Yorktown. Gates, a British expatriate, married Mary Vallance, a Washington County Marylander, in 1786. Another Marylander, Maj. Gen. James Wilkinson, delivered Sir John Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga to Congress." -- Maryland Historical Society
